Putrajaya, officially known as the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, is a meticulously planned city and serves as the federal administrative hub of Malaysia. In 1999, the government relocated from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya due to overcrowding and traffic issues in the former. Kuala Lumpur continues to be Malaysia’s national capital, hosting the King, the Parliament, all foreign embassies, and remains the country’s commercial and financial center. The concept of Putrajaya was initiated by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. It became Malaysia’s third Federal Territory, following Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, in 2001.
Named in honor of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the territory is completely surrounded by the Sepang District in the state of Selangor. Putrajaya is also part of MSC Malaysia, a special economic zone encompassing Klang Valley. In Sanskrit, “putra” translates to “prince” or “male child,” and “jaya” means “success” or “victory.” The development of Putrajaya began in the early 1990s, and today, significant landmarks have been completed with an anticipated population growth in the near future.
