Journey to Kui Buri

After leaving my finance job in Seoul to backpack through Southeast Asia, I found myself in Thailand, eager to explore its natural wonders. Kui Buri National Park had been on my radar for a while, especially after hearing about the Elephant and Wildlife Watching Tour. The promise of seeing wild elephants in their natural habitat was too tempting to resist.

I started my journey from Hua Hin, where I was staying in a budget-friendly hostel. The tour guide picked me up right on time, and we embarked on a scenic 1.5-hour drive to the park. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also shared fascinating insights about Thai culture and the local environment. We even made a quick stop for photos, capturing the lush landscapes that stretched out before us.

Into the Wild

Upon arriving at Kui Buri National Park, we swapped our comfortable car for a rugged pick-up truck. The open-air ride was exhilarating, with the wind in my hair and the scent of the rainforest all around. Accompanied by a ranger, we ventured deeper into the park, stopping at various vantage points to scan the horizon for wildlife.

Our first sighting was a majestic Gaur, a type of Asian cattle, grazing peacefully in the distance. As we continued, we encountered a whole herd of Gaurs, their sheer size and presence leaving us in awe. The anticipation built as we moved to the next viewpoint, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive elephants.

The Elephant Encounter

The air was thick with excitement as we waited, listening intently for any sign of elephants. Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of trumpeting echoed through the trees. Our guide led us on foot into the thicket, umbrellas in hand to shield us from the rainforest’s persistent drizzle.

There, about 150 meters away, stood a magnificent elephant, its presence both humbling and thrilling. We watched in silence, respecting the wildness of the moment. A second elephant appeared at another lookout, a testament to the park’s thriving ecosystem.

Though these were the only elephants we saw that day, the experience was unforgettable. The unpredictability of wildlife viewing is what makes it so special, a reminder that nature operates on its own terms. As we made our way back, the day concluded with a delicious Thai dinner, shared with fellow travelers who had become friends.

Kui Buri National Park offered a glimpse into a world where nature reigns supreme, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the wild and untamed.
