Immersed in Tradition: Calligraphy and Tea in Kumamoto
In search of a deeper connection to Japanese culture, I embarked on a journey to Kumamoto to experience the art of calligraphy and the elegance of a traditional tea ceremony. What I discovered was a profound immersion into the heart of Japanese tradition.
A Warm Welcome into Japanese Tradition
As I stepped off the tram at Shinmachi, I was greeted by Tommy, our gracious host for the day. Her warm smile and gentle demeanor immediately set the tone for what would be an unforgettable experience. She kindly inquired about any dietary restrictions, as she had prepared a delightful snack to accompany our tea ceremony later. This attention to detail was just the beginning of a day filled with thoughtful gestures and cultural immersion.
Tommy’s home, nestled just a short walk from the historic Kumamoto Castle, was a serene haven. Her husband, Taka, welcomed us with equal warmth, and together they created an atmosphere of genuine hospitality. The intimate setting of their home allowed for a personal connection that is often missing in larger group tours. It was clear that Tommy and Taka were not just instructors but passionate ambassadors of Japanese culture.
The Art of Calligraphy
Our journey into the world of Japanese calligraphy began with a brief introduction to its history and significance. Tommy, a skilled calligrapher, had prepared a selection of kanji characters for us to choose from. I opted for the character “和” (wa), symbolizing harmony—a fitting choice for the peaceful environment we found ourselves in.
Under Tommy’s patient guidance, we practiced our chosen characters on rice paper. Each stroke was a meditative exercise, requiring focus and precision. Taka meticulously laid out our practice sheets, allowing us to observe our progress. It was a humbling experience to see the evolution of our skills, from tentative beginnings to confident strokes.
The culmination of our efforts was the creation of a final piece on high-quality paper. Tommy encouraged us to sign our work in Japanese, adding a personal touch to our creations. As I completed my piece, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and connection to this ancient art form.
A Taste of Tradition
With our calligraphy pieces proudly displayed, Tommy and Taka transitioned seamlessly into the tea ceremony. The “BONTEMAE” style, performed at a table, was both elegant and accessible. As we sipped matcha tea and savored traditional sweets, Tommy shared insights into the cultural significance of each element of the ceremony.
The tea ceremony was a sensory delight, from the vibrant green of the matcha to the delicate flavors of the sweets. It was a moment of mindfulness, a pause in the day’s activities to appreciate the beauty of simplicity and tradition.
As our time with Tommy and Taka drew to a close, I reflected on the richness of the experience. It was more than just a lesson in calligraphy and tea; it was a window into the heart of Japanese culture, a reminder of the value of patience, precision, and presence. For anyone visiting Kumamoto, this cultural experience is a must-do, offering a rare opportunity to connect deeply with the traditions of Japan.
