• Kumamoto Castle - Kumamoto Castle stands as one of Japan’s most renowned and historically significant castles. Constructed in the early 1600s by the influential lord Kato Kiyomasa, it is celebrated for its black main keep, expansive stone walls, and remarkable size. Unlike many other Japanese castles, Kumamoto Castle faced actual battles on two occasions and was never overtaken, earning a reputation as an indomitable fortress.

The castle has long been a symbol of Kumamoto City, admired for its architectural elegance and commanding presence. However, in 2016, a severe earthquake inflicted considerable damage to its walls and turrets. Although the main keep remained intact, much of the structure required restoration.

Currently, Kumamoto Castle is undergoing extensive reconstruction, utilizing a combination of traditional methods and modern technology. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the grounds and observe this unique and inspiring process—an experience that brings history to life and highlights the resilience of both the castle and the city it represents.
