Bonwire - After approximately a 6-hour drive from Accra, including stops for lunch and restrooms, the journey will introduce the Ashanti culture through the art of hand-woven Kente cloth. Participants will discover the rich history of Kente weaving, learning about the significance of its colors and patterns, and the traditional events each design is associated with.
Following the demonstration, there will be an opportunity to try weaving and shop for souvenirs in the showroom. Prices are reasonable and open to negotiation, so feel free to bargain for the best price.
Ntonso Adinkra Craftsmen - At Ntonso, the group will learn about the renowned Adinkra symbols and have the chance to purchase souvenirs at a fair price, before retiring to the hotel for the evening.
Kumasi
Manhyia Palace Museum - After breakfast, the group will visit the Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the Asantehene (Ashanti King), to gain insight into the Ashanti Kingdom, its vibrant culture, and its people. The tour will cover their resistance against British colonization, including efforts to protect the sacred Golden Stool, a symbol of the Ashanti nation. Visitors will also view significant artifacts, once taken by the British during colonial times, now “loaned” back to Ghana.
Kejetia Market - Kumasi hosts the largest open-air market in West Africa, Kejetia Market. After the palace tour, the group will explore a section of this bustling market, offering a glimpse into local life. Whether shopping for souvenirs or enjoying the lively atmosphere, it’s an experience not to be missed. Following the market visit, the group will have lunch at a local restaurant, then return to the hotel to relax and prepare for the next day’s departure to Cape Coast.
Kumasi - Cape Coast
Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park - After breakfast, the group will check out of the hotel in Kumasi and embark on a roughly four-hour drive to Cape Coast. Along the way, there will be a significant and emotional stop at the Ancestral Slave River site in Assin Manso. This historic location marks where enslaved Africans took their ‘last bath’ before being transported to coastal forts and castles for shipment to unknown destinations. In a symbolic and reflective gesture, participants will take their ‘first bath’ here to honor the memory of their ancestors and connect with their journey.
Cape Coast
Kakum National Park - The group will visit Kakum National Park, about a 40-minute drive from the hotel, to experience the renowned rainforest canopy walk. This thrilling walk takes participants across a series of suspension bridges high above the forest floor, offering stunning views of the lush canopy and its wildlife. Please note that the canopy walk may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights, seniors, or individuals with knee or mobility issues, as it requires some physical exertion. However, for those ready for the challenge, it promises to be an exciting and memorable adventure.
Cape Coast Castle Experiences - Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds deep historical significance as a key location in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. During the visit, the group will tour the castle’s dungeons, which once held countless enslaved Africans under harsh conditions as they awaited forced departure. The tour concludes at the infamous “Door of No Return,” symbolizing the final exit point for captives before their transportation to the Americas and other parts of the world. This visit offers a chance to reflect and pay solemn tribute to the memory of those forcibly taken from their homeland.
Cape Coast - Accra
Elmina Castle - After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, the group will visit Elmina Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the oldest European structures in sub-Saharan Africa, originally built by the Portuguese. Like Cape Coast Castle, Elmina played a central role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, serving as a holding point for enslaved Africans before they were shipped to the New World. After this deeply moving visit, the group will begin the journey back to Accra, marking the end of the tour.
