The itinerary includes a visit to the Katskhi Pillar. In the 7th century, monks constructed a monastery atop a natural stone pillar near Chiatura. This site was used by Christian ascetics who resided at the top to demonstrate their faith. Although this practice has faded, the monastery remains. A Georgian monk has been residing at the peak for nearly two decades. The staircase leading up is referred to as a “ladder to the sky.” Only men are permitted to ascend the pillar, and only under special circumstances.
Visitors are not allowed to reach the summit.

In the 7th century, a group of monks established a monastery atop a natural rock stack near Chiatura. It served as a dwelling for Christian hermits who resided at its peak to demonstrate their faithfulness. Although the cult associated with it has vanished, the monastery remains to this day. Those who wish to visit the peak can do so by ascending a 130-foot stairway. A Georgian monk has made the peak his home for nearly two decades. The towering staircase is often referred to as the ‘stairway to heaven’. However, only males are permitted to scale the rock formation, and that too under specific circumstances.
