Gion Walking Tour with the Gaeko Maeko experience in an old Ochaya - This was an enjoyable and illuminating tour of Gion in Kyoto during early April. It started out at the statue of the founder of Kabuki and eventually walking past cherry blossoms of different varieties (there are 500) and eventually to the Ochaya to visit the Gaeko and the Maeko. Mesmerized by the beauty and the attention to the 400 year old art form. Yuko, was fabulous, as our guide. She has a deep interest and passion for Japanese tradition and culture, particularly the art and craft of the Geisha. She is a hobbyist guide, whilst working as a clerk in a university. She is particular, wants to answer all questions and is very attentive.

Great experience! - After our tour group met our guide took us to a cute little spot by a river to tell us what to expect. We then walked through the streets while our guide pointed out facts about the area as we walked down 300yr old streets learning about the history and traditions of the area. We saw all the highlights of the area including some we would never know about if it were not for our guide. Being able to witness the dance and meet and greet of a practising maiko/geisha was an unforgettable experience!

Walking tour of Gion with maeko performance. - Very interesting walking tour finishing with a visit to a Teahouse hosted by the owner and a Maeko who performed two dances. The owner told us about the tradition of maeko and gaiko and then the maeko answered some questions. A fascinating insight in to the culture.

Meeting the Maiko, and hearing from her directly on her experience and life, and her training, was absolutely fascinating.
