Must do tour in Kyoto - This is an absolute gem of an experience and 6 star rating from our perspective. Richard is super knowledgable and structures the tour in a proffesional fashion so you go from Geisha specifics to Kyoto's and overall Japan history smoothly. Time flew really fast for us and even our teenage kids were not bored and this is a sign of a really interesting experince.

Great tour - Richard gave a very in depth explanation of the geisha tradition linking it back to the wives and concubines of the samurai.
Very entertaining and he had an obvious affinity with the city and its history.

Excellent!! - This is a fabulous tour!! One of my best experiences in Kyoto.
Richard was our tour guide and he was excellent. He is a wonderful storyteller, as he is intelligent, knowledgeable, passionate, patient and a cool guy ;) Also, he communicates in English very well.
Despite the rain and a bit cold that day, it was truly a pleasure to listen to Richard and to participate in this tour. He showed us many historic parts of the beautiful Kyoto city, and he explained to us the history and the culture of Maiko and Geisha. We even got lucky and we saw a few geisha that night walking the streets of Gion district. Wow!! It was very special to witness and almost surreal.
Richard kept things interesting and fun during the entire tour, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and excited, even the two little girls that were on this night tour with us. Bravo! :)
I would highly recommend booking this tour with Richard. You will not regret it.

Must do local tour! - Excellent tour, I highly recommend. Richard provided great insights not only into Geisha culture, but on a wide range of topics from architecture and landscaping to Shintoism...all while touring us through scenic areas in and adjacent to Gion

Geisha Nights - Our guide Richard was amazing. He’s depth of knowledge and ability to impart that knowledge was amazing. He managed to get us to see Geisha’s , Meiko’s and others related to Geisha world.

Great Tour - I would highly recommend this tour. Richard is very knowledgeable on the area and its history. He is engaging and passionate in his delivery. He really paints a picture of what life was like.
I feel like I have learnt a lot about the Geishas, Maiko and Oiran and what differentiates them from each other.
He went above and beyond.

Great experience and beautiful sights at night! - Richard is so knowledgeable and a great storyteller. This was a fun and learning experience for our entire family and the sights are beautiful at night, very different than how we experienced them in the morning.

Gion District at Night - This walking tour exceeded all expectations. Exploring Kyoto’s Gion district at night truly made a difference—fewer crowds, a more authentic atmosphere, and a deeper appreciation for the history and culture.
Our guide, Richard, was outstanding. Without question, the most knowledgeable guide we’ve ever had. His passion for Kyoto’s history, geisha culture, and traditions was evident throughout the entire tour. He didn’t just explain things—he brought them to life.
We walked through historic streets, temples, and hidden corners that we would have never discovered on our own. The small group setting made it even more enjoyable and personal.
What really stood out was how much Richard went beyond expectations—answering every question, sharing insights you won’t find in guidebooks, and making the entire experience engaging from start to finish.
Highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a meaningful and authentic experience in Kyoto.
