We can highly recommend booking a government guide - We were given a guided tour of parts of Kyoto by an extremely interesting and knowledgeable guide, Kazu. He communicated with us a few times before our tour to form an itinerary. He gave us maps and information sheets before we set off. His passion for the city of Kyoto was obvious. We covered temples and food markets and old areas of the city. He helped us purchase our bullet train tickets also. A very worthwhile and fascinating experience- we can highly recommend this.

Great Kyoto-led tour with Kaz - Kaz was our guide through Kyoto. He did an amazing job and took us to Fushimi Inari, Nijo Castle and the bamboo garden. He was very informative, kind, friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend him and our driver.

Tour was okay but not necessary for independent travelers - Our guide took us around Kyoto and we visited all 4sites on our list. I think for most people a tour guide is unnecessary as Kyoto pretty easy to travel if you are comfortable using bus/metro. Googlemaps is very accurate. Descriptions of all sites were available in english on info boards. No need for a guide from a travel perspective. If you are looking to enhance your knowledge about Japanese culture, then it completely depends on the guide you get, depends whether they are engaging in conversation or are fluent in english.

Average experience for the price - Sadly this private tour was a miss for us as we didn’t feel our guide was completely fluent, nor did he fully understand our questions, and the tour felt quite light on facts more generally. We did a free walking tour in Hiroshima and had an excellent experience so this was quite disappointing given the price point and our intention of get a deeper understanding of Kyoto culture.
