  This journey includes an authentic tea ceremony in “Rakuju,” a distinguished tea room overseen by the 12th-generation grandmaster of the Sen no Rikyu lineage. The room features a traditional “Nijiriguchi” (crawl-in entrance), providing a mystical and tranquil ambiance.

  While this tour can be enjoyed in your own attire, you have the option to choose the “Silk Kimono” experience to fully embrace Japanese tradition. We offer high-quality silk kimonos for both men and women.

  Attire for Kimono: If you opt for the kimono experience, please wear an inner shirt with a low neckline to ensure it does not show at the collar.
  Socks: Regardless of your choice, please wear socks to protect our historic wooden floors.

This unique tea ceremony is held in the most traditional tea room at the Nishijin Lifestyle Museum Tondaya, a cultural asset recognized nationally, with a rich history of over 140 years.

Inside this historic machiya, there is a small, genuine tea room called Rakuju. Its construction was overseen by the 12th-generation tea master from the Musha Koji Senke school, one of the main schools of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Savor Uji matcha and traditional Japanese sweets as you immerse yourself in the tranquil history and peace of an authentic tea ceremony, while watching an experienced tea master perform the ritual.

After the tea ceremony, guests will be guided through Tondaya itself—a 140-year-old machiya recognized as a culturally significant site by the Kyoto City Government. Tondaya is a treasure trove of historically valuable artifacts and stories, offering a deeper insight into Kyoto’s living heritage, shared by enthusiastic staff.
