This was our first tour... - This was our first tour in Fortuna and was a great way to start the trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot. Our guide pointed out wildlife that we would not have been able to spot otherwise. The tour finished with delicious fresh pineapple.

Great experience, great guide - Carlos is an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide. He pointed out many animals and birds that we would have not seen on our own. He assisted us with photos and videos that will memorialize our visit. Highly recommend visiting this place and touring it with a guide.

Recommended - Really exciting and really good experience. Skillful guide who spotted and told about many different animals; we saw really many bird species, frogs, flies, owls and three whole lazy animals. We had never seen them ourselves! And you also have it for free. Entrance to the park again the next day.

Ask for Mr. Bogarin's Tour Group - I booked a guided group tour of Bogarin Trail because I'd read that this was a place where you're pretty much guaranteed to see a sloth. When we drove up, my heart sank a bit because it's right in town and the signage looks quite touristy. Some other folks on Facebook had commented that we should have gone to a national park instead to see the animals more "in their natural environment." After visiting Bogarin Trail, I think that both pieces of advice are right: Visit this lovely little private park *and* one or more of the national parks. We got lucky: Our guide was co-founder William Bogarin. Spending a couple of hours with this sweet man would have been a treat even if we were sitting around at the train station. He's very genuine, made a real connection with us, shared his life story and the creation of the park. His passion for nature and the animals here is obvious. He was so committed to making sure our group saw a black and green frog at the end that he was late for his next group. Then he insisted we WhatsApp him so he could send us photos and videos after. My phone blew up over the next day or so with truly amazing videos he'd captured. I think the reasons that you have a good chance of sloth spotting here is that it's a small area, with fields and/or town surrounding it, so the sloths that are there live there all the time. It's not as if they're fenced in but this patch of forest is their home. And of course the guides including Mr. Bogarin know where in the park they hang out. Another reason the wildlife are a little easier to see here is that the vegetation -- while thick -- is not quite as dense as in the national parks. After all, as Mr. Bogarin explained during the tour, this was a cow pasture 25 years ago. It's a new growth forest. We found a male sloth early on in our walk, and William got its attention by whistling like a female. Later, he showed us a red poison dart frog, and soon my kids were spotting more of them in the same area. Last, we saw the green and black poison dart frog. We also saw a number of birds. Another thing we really enjoyed was hearing about Mr. Bogarin's experience of the 1968 volcanic eruption -- how he would light a cigarette from the lava, for instance. He also showed us amazing characteristics of plants growing there, like stretchy sap from a rubber tree, and a frond that made temporary prints on black clothing with its spores.

Bogarin Trail with 2 Toddlers! - We had the incredible honor of doing a guided walk at Bogarin Trail with Mr. Bogarin himself. His passion for the land his family has protected is evident in every word he speaks. While the trail is beautiful on its own, it would have been nearly impossible to spot the wildlife without his expert eyes and powerful binoculars. Wildlife spotted: We saw a variety of creatures including a mother sloth, an iguana, leaf-cutter ants, parakeets, and even frog eggs! Ease of Trail: The walk took about 1.5 hours and was completely stroller-friendly. Our 4-year-old was able to walk the entire loop with ease. Highly Recommended: If you want to see the "hidden" side of the jungle, hiring a guide here is worth every penny for the educational and visual experience. Note they close at 5 and their last entry inside is at 4pm (they are strict, for good reason!).

Amazing Experience! - Wow! What an amazing experience we had. Dennis (Denison) was an excellent guide. He was super knowledgeable, friendly, great with children, awesome with technology; really could not have had a better guide. In addition to sloths, we saw 3 types of frogs (red-eyed frog), a black and white owl, bats, a fer-de-lance snake, and many cool birds. You must hire a guide when you go on this excursion. Otherwise, you will walk around and not see 90 percent of what we saw. Dennis knew where all the different animals were located in the park and had binoculars to help us get amazing pictures. Absolutely a must go in La Fortuna!
