Unforgettable trip to Tangier - George and I did the bike ride up the Rock of Gibraltar on Saturday. On Sunday we hired a guide (Abu) to spend the day with us in Tangier, Morocco. It was a wonderful adventure that began with a hike across an international airport runway that separates Gibraltar and La Linea, Spain where we cleared customs and found our ride to Tarifa. From Tarifa we caught a ferry and an hour later we were on the northern shores of Africa. We started the day riding around the city by the King Mohammed VI estate which includes his palace, his mother’s home, the Crown Prince’s home, the Kings office building, a home for diplomatic guest and any number of other out buildings. They are definitely living like a King with beautiful grounds and plenty of security at the multiple points of entry. From there we rode around in some remarkable high end residential communities over looking the Atlantic ocean and the Straights of Gibraltar, we did the obligatory Moroccan camel ride on the beach which turned out better than we expected and we ended up at the Casbah (a centuries old fort over looking the ocean that’s been converted to a retail open market mixed with single family attached housing) where Abu introduced us to his friends - a rug maker, a perfumists, a guy selling olives and the best dates I have ever eaten, friends selling fresh fruits and vegetables, a restauranteur, a snake handler, a bread maker and on and on. They were all very nice people (I regret that I cannot recall their names and even if I could there would be zero chance I could spell them) and most of them spoke some english that was for the most part self taught. They are hard working muslim entrepreneurs working hard making a living in the open markets of Tangier. They don’t see many Americans but are very knowlegable about the USA and were very engaging conversationally and of course very good sales people. The colors and smells inside the Casbah were very interesting and varied. The doors on most of the homes were a piece of art, no two alike, the narrow walkways had a bit of everything - gardens, murals, walls of a variety of color all very interesting. And the smells of fresh spices that were on every corner were over the top aromatically, the fresh olives and dates, the flowers, the prepared food all together provided an aromatic sensory overload in a highly desirable yet untypical manner. We finished our day with a late lunch at another friend of Abu’s place that was delicious and wrapped that up with a Muslim tradition - a pour of mint tea. The whole city is like a piece of historic and modern art all organically settled together on the banks of the Atlantic ocean. I have way too many pictures to share but here are a handful that I hope you enjoy.

Excellent - The activity was excellent! Very well organized, the guide Yasmin who welcomed us in Tangier was excellent, calm, explained everything in detail. The meals were also very interesting. A typical menu was offered in very pleasant places, both for the morning snack and for lunch.

The best excursion l’ve ever lived in my life - Abu is a WONDERFUL tour guide as well as personable and polite. I highly recommend this tour. He was so flexible as we were in the wrong meeting place and waited for us to catch up. We missed the early ferry but it was no problem for him. He made the trip absolutely FANTASTIC. Take this tour and learn about culture, history, life of Tangier. Location is beautiful with wonderful people. BOOK THIS TOUR.
