La Paz (3,600m) – Paso Zongo (4,700m)
Huayna Potosi - The journey begins with a drive from La Paz to Paso Zongo (4,700m). Along the route, there are stunning views of Lake Titicaca in the distance and the majestic mountain ahead. A brief stop is made at an old mine cemetery with Huayna Potosi as a backdrop. Upon arrival at Paso Zongo, gear is dropped off in the hut, followed by a delightful lunch (all meals during the trip are included). Post-lunch, there is a walk to the lower glacier. Here, guides provide demonstrations and instructions on basic ice climbing and mountaineering techniques. Participants practice these techniques with the guidance of the instructors and the use of climbing equipment. Later, ice climbing techniques are practiced on small ice walls with safety ropes. There is also an opportunity to explore the ice formations on the lower glacier. After the practice session, the group returns to base camp to sleep in a refugio. Cooks prepare dinner, drinks, and snacks.
Day 2: Paso Zongo (4,700m) - High Camp (5,200m)
Huayna Potosi - The day involves a relatively easy ascent to high camp. High camp is situated on a rock buttress at an altitude of 5,200m, at the glacier’s base. The ascent follows a well-trodden rock path. During the walk, there are expansive views down the valley, including the cloud forest and part of the upper Amazon below. Upon reaching high camp, gear is prepared for the following day, as an early start is planned. There is also time to rest and rehydrate. From the hut at high camp, the mountain is visible, setting the stage for the next day’s objective. An early night is planned, with accommodation in the Refugio.
Day 3: High Camp – Summit (6,088m) – High Camp - La Paz (3,600m)
Huayna Potosi - The day begins early, with departure around 1 am. Due to the cold, dressing warmly is essential. The climb starts on the glacier, requiring crampons and other climbing gear. The route primarily follows a trail on the glacier, with two steep sections, one at approximately 5,600m, known as the Pala Chica. The trail navigates through snow and an ice wall. After this section, the trail continues on the glacier up to 6,000m. Around this time, the sunrise becomes visible on the horizon, and the first rays provide warmth. From this vantage point, the summit is visible, with the final section offering excellent climbing on an exposed ridge. After capturing photos at the mountain’s peak, the descent follows the same path back to high camp. Upon returning to high camp, there is a brief rest and gear is packed. The group then descends to base camp to meet transportation back to La Paz.
