- Lucca - Upon arrival in Lucca, enjoy some free time or opt for a guided walking tour of the city center with our escort (if selected). The tour will take you to key landmarks such as the Torre Guinigi, Anfiteatro Square, and the San Frediano Church.
- Torre Guinigi - Marvel at the 45-meter-high tower, a quintessential example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Constructed from stone and brick, it is one of Lucca’s most iconic monuments, notable for the holm oaks adorning its top.
In the early 14th century, Lucca boasted over 250 towers and numerous bell towers, enriching the medieval city within a much smaller wall perimeter than today. The Guinigi family, then rulers of the city, adorned their austere residences with a tree-lined tower, a symbol of rebirth and their lordship. Ascending to the top involves 25 flights of stairs, totaling 241 steps. The initial steps are relatively easy, but the final ascent requires navigating small metal ramps. Inside, admire numerous paintings depicting medieval life scenes.
- Basilica of San Frediano - Explore this Romanesque church, built in the first half of the 6th century, dedicated to the three holy Levites: Vincenzo, Stefano, and Lorenzo. The original church’s construction is attributed to San Frediano himself, an Irish presbyter elected bishop of Lucca between 560 and 588. Excavations beneath the current basilica have confirmed the presence of the ancient structure.
- Piazza Anfiteatro - Visit this square, once a second-century Roman amphitheater in Lucca. The square emerged in the Middle Ages and was known as “parlascio,” a distortion of the Latin “paralisium” (“amphitheater”), influenced by the word “talk,” indicating a place for citizens’ meetings. Over time, it was filled with buildings used as a salt warehouse, powder magazine, and prison.
- Piazza dei Miracoli - Fall in love with Pisa and the stunning Piazza Dei Miracoli, the city’s most popular attraction. Enjoy free time to explore the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery, or relax on the green meadow in the shadow of these monuments. An ice cream in the city center is included in your excursion (if selected)!
- Leaning Tower of Pisa - If selected, seize the opportunity to climb this iconic tower, famously known as the Leaning Tower, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, located in the renowned Piazza del Duomo. It is Pisa’s most famous monument due to its distinctive tilt, symbolizing Pisa and Italy. This freestanding bell tower stands 57 meters tall (58.36 meters including the foundation) and was constructed over two centuries, from the 12th to the 14th century. Weighing 14,453 tons, it features a curved line with blind arches and six floors of loggias. The tilt resulted from subsidence of the ground during the early construction stages.
- Camposanto - Visit the Monumental Cemetery, where legend claims that bodies buried here decompose within 24 hours. Architecturally, the Camposanto consists of a high rectangular wall, with the side facing the Cathedral and the elongated Baptistery. The exterior is simple white marble, featuring 43 blind arches with human heads on the arch connections and two doors on the southern side. The main entrance, facing the square to the east, is adorned with a rich Gothic tabernacle above the portal, a 14th-century work containing statues of the Madonna and Child and four saints by a follower of John Pisano, along with Angels by Tino di Camaino.
- Battistero di San Giovanni - Admire Italy’s largest baptistery, standing 54 meters high with a 34-meter diameter, constructed from 1152 to 1363. The baptistery features a unique truncated cone dome, similar to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Pisa, also by the same architect, covering only the internal circle of pillars. At the time, the construction technique for a large hemispherical or polygonal dome was almost unknown. Diotisalvi’s design referenced both the Dome of the Rock (believed to be built on the Temple of Solomon’s ruins) externally and the Anástasis of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher internally, both in Jerusalem. Nicola and Giovanni Pisano later continued the work, modifying the Baptistery in Gothic style with a loggia and hemispherical dome (effectively a dome) concealing the pyramidal one.
- Duomo di Pisa - The Cathedral of Pisa, officially the Primate Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is located in the center of Piazza del Duomo, also known as Piazza dei Miracoli. It serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pisa and the Primate church. A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, particularly Pisan Romanesque, it stands as a testament to the prestige and wealth of the maritime republic of Pisa at its peak. The building features a Latin cross shape with a large dome at the arms’ intersection. The longitudinal body, divided into five naves, spans ten bays, continuing into the choir with two additional bays and a final apse crowning the central nave. The transept has four bays on each side (or six, including the two shared with the longitudinal body) and comprises three naves with apses on both sides. Four large pillars in the center define the rectangular cross, topped with a large elliptical dome.
