- Lake Louise - In a few minutes, Lake Louise will come into view. Covering 222 acres and reaching depths of 230 feet, there’s plenty of this lake to explore. Before the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived, the Stoney Nakoda fished here, calling it “Horâ Juthin Îmne,” meaning “Lake of Little Fishes.”
- Lake Louise Ski Resort & Summer Gondola - Welcome to Lake Louise! Prepare to witness miles of untouched wilderness, shimmering glacial lakes, and more on this tour. The journey begins at the Lake Louise Ski Resort’s parking lot at 1 Whitehorn Rd. If not already there, head there now.
- Morant’s Curve - Named after Nicholas Morant, a photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, who captured images of this spot in the mid-20th century. These photos were featured in promotional materials for Banff, attracting tourists eager to see what Morant saw through his lens.
- Castle Lookout Trailhead - Approaching soon is the Castle Lookout Trail. This 5-mile hike takes 3-4 hours and is challenging. However, those who reach the side of Castle Mountain find the journey worthwhile! The trail offers views of the Bow River and the Rockies. Climbers claim the end of Castle Lookout Trail provides one of the best panoramic views in Banff National Park.
- Silverton Falls - Ahead is the trail to Silverton Falls. It’s a moderate, one-mile hike taking about half an hour. The trail’s end offers an incredible view of Bow Valley on one side and a 160-foot waterfall on the other! To visit the falls, turn left into the parking lot ahead.
- Moose Meadows - Another breathtaking hike is approaching! This moderately challenging trail winds through Moose Meadows and up to the Ink Pots springs. It takes about three hours and covers over five miles, with a 1,100-foot elevation gain that hikers will feel!
- Johnston Canyon - Next is Johnston Canyon, the park’s most popular hike. This easy one-mile trail is a must-see. The canyon is named after a prospector who never found gold but mapped the canyon during his search!
- Hillsdale Meadow Viewpoint - Approaching is Hillsdale Meadow Viewpoint, offering 360-degree views of the Rockies and a meadow full of wildflowers! Pilot Mountain is visible in the distance, along with the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks and the Bow River. It’s an incredible vantage point. Pull into the turnout ahead to visit, or continue straight.
- Backswamp Viewpoint - Coming up soon is Backswamp Viewpoint. Despite its unappealing name, this spot is a great place to stop! Backswamp Viewpoint offers a spectacular view of Mount Bourgeau. The Bow River runs close to the lookout point, and lucky visitors might see a train along the riverbank!
- Vermilion Lakes Viewpoint - Just ahead is Vermilion Lakes Viewpoint, featuring beautiful views of three small lakes side by side. Beyond these lakes lies the town of Banff. This is a favorite spot for watching sunsets, sunrises, and wildlife! Visitors might see loons, buffleheads, and possibly an osprey. Elk, mule deer, and occasional moose sightings have been reported at Vermilion Lakes.
