- Patan (Lalitpur) - The guide will greet you at the entrance of the historic town of Patan and lead you on an intriguing journey through its narrow lanes and expansive courtyards, nestled beside grand palaces and shimmering shrines. Throughout the tour, stories, folklore, and myths will be shared, bringing the ancient city to life.
- Pimbahal - In the initial series of walks through traditional courtyards, the discussion will focus on how Patan’s traditional urban settlements embody spiritual practices and indigenous knowledge.
These courtyards lead to Pimbahal, a Newar Buddhist monastery from the 15th century, where faith practices and the tangible art of Buddhist philosophies will be explored.
The tour then exits through narrow streets to the picturesque Pimbahal Pond.
- Nyakhachowk - From Pimbahal, a cozy path allows observation of traditional architecture, including falchaa (resting areas), ancestral shrines, and beautiful vernacular houses.
The tour enters another courtyard, Nyakhachowk, home to one of the most significant Theravada monasteries in the Kathmandu valley. Adjacent to the monastery, in an intriguing juxtaposition, is an animist shrine dedicated to Nyasa Dyo, an indigenous deity who is the patron of the arts—dance, music, painting, etc.
The journey continues to Aki Bhahal, a courtyard that exemplifies the transition from traditional to modern architecture in the city. These changes in the built environment will be explored, leading to Pradhan Chowk, the most elegant and majestic traditional courtyard of old Patan, built by traders who connected the Kathmandu valley with Tibet.
- Nagbahaa नागबहा - The exploration continues to Nag Bahal, one of the largest courtyards in old Patan, where the impact of ancient globalization on traditional art will be discussed. The Greek influence and Hellenistic impressions in Buddhist/Hindu iconography are remarkable.
If desired, a stop can be made at the majestic Golden Temple, which requires a ticket costing 100 NPR for entrance.
- Swotha Square - The walking tour concludes in this beautiful square, featuring several temples, shrines, and tea shops.
If desired, guidance can be provided towards Patan Durbar Square, the main temple complex, where independent exploration of the stunning museum and art/history can be enjoyed.
Alternatively, participants can return with the guide to the endpoint, which is the same as the meeting point: Patan Dhoka.
- Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar) - This is one of the most respected and ornate Buddhist monasteries in the Patan area, with over 4000 ordained monks as part of the monastic order.
It is an excellent place to admire the intricate woodwork and metal carving details throughout the complex. Please note that there is a separate entrance fee of NPR 100 for this complex, which is not included in the tour cost.
