During spring and early summer, the park is adorned with beautiful flowers. Visitors can spend peaceful hours enjoying the expansive beaches along the Atlantic Ocean’s shores.
Langebaan - Following the visit to the West Coast National Park, the tour proceeds to the overnight destination in Langebaan.
West Coast Fossil Park | Cape Columbine Nature Reserve
West Coast Fossil Park - The morning is dedicated to exploring the West Coast Fossil Park near Saldanha Bay. This National Heritage Site is globally recognized for its exceptionally preserved fossil remains from the terminal Miocene/early Pliocene. The 45-minute guided tour showcases fossils as they were found, with a remarkable diversity of species, making it one of the most varied Mio-Pliocene sites worldwide. Discoveries include bears, saber-tooth cats, wild pigs, aardvarks, an extinct giraffe-like sivathere, hunting hyenas, and at least three elephant species, including the first mammoths. Approximately 860 square feet of the fossil bed is exposed for viewing.
Cape Columbine Nature Reserve Tietiesbaai - The expedition continues with a visit to the coastal village of Paternoster, known for its abundance of rock lobster, perlemoen, and other seafood. Just three kilometers from Paternoster is the Cape Columbine lighthouse, named after a shipwreck in 1929. The lighthouse, with its 9 million candle-power and radio beacon, serves as a crucial navigational point for ships approaching Southern Africa from Europe and America.
