• Tunney Hunsaker Bridge - Named after Tunney Hunsaker, a police chief from Fayetteville, who is also known for being Muhammad Ali’s first professional opponent. Although Hunsaker lost the fight, he certainly didn’t make it easy for Ali.

• Concho Rim Overlook - From this vantage point, you can gaze over a dramatic horseshoe-shaped bend in the New River. The detour takes us slightly off the main path, but it offers one of the most iconic views in New River Gorge.

• Oak Hill - In 1952, on New Year’s Eve, a snowstorm swept across the South. Williams found himself stranded in Montgomery, Alabama, where he hired a college student named Charlie Carr to drive him all the way to Ohio.

• Dunloup Creek Falls - Approaching Dunloup Creek Falls, where Dunloup Creek meets the New River, cascading 20 feet down a breathtaking sandstone shelf.

• Mount Hope - Like many towns in this region of West Virginia, Mount Hope’s history began with the discovery of coal. In the late 1800s, miners discovered coal at nearby Turkey Knob, and soon the streets of Mount Hope were bustling with hardworking miners and their families.

• Thomas Burford Pugh Memorial Bridge - We are about to cross the Thomas Burford Pugh Bridge, which spans the New River at the small town of Prince. While today we cross for free, in the 1930s, drivers had to pay a significant toll of 25 cents, a considerable sum during the Great Depression!

• Quinnimont - At its peak, nearly 500 people resided in Quinnimont, with most having ties to the nearby mines.

• Layland Miners Memorial - Ahead are the remnants of Layland, a former coal town. Look to the left shortly for a collection of abandoned coal company houses, once owned by the local mining company and rented to their underpaid workers.

• Meadow Bridge - We are now passing through the small town of Meadow Bridge. While we’ve encountered many coal towns today, this is our first true timber town. The nearby Meadow River Lumber Company once harvested and sold millions of feet of lumber.

• Sandstone Falls - Sandstone Falls are the largest series of falls on the entire New River! These falls were formed over millennia as the New River’s force eroded the soft rock beneath the sandstone layers.
