Mohenjo-daro, translating to ‘Mound of the Dead Men,’ is an archaeological site located in Sindh, Pakistan. Established around 2500 BCE, it was among the largest settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and one of the earliest major cities globally, existing alongside the civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Minoan Crete, and Norte Chico.
Mohenjo-daro was deserted in the 19th century BCE as the Indus Valley Civilization waned, and the site remained undiscovered until the 1920s. Extensive excavations have been carried out since then, and the city was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
