Juan Carlos, one of the local guides, shares, ‘From the start, it’s an exhilarating adventure as you traverse the Bayuyo badlands. With their scorched earth, dusty trails, and volcanoes, you might feel as if you’ve landed on Mars.’
The route takes you inland to the Bayuyo volcanic zone, speeding along dirt tracks and past craters on lava-marked fields. There’s a photo opportunity at the Bayuyo volcano itself, where you might encounter the friendly local chipmunks. ‘Bring some nuts,’ suggests Juan Carlos. The journey continues to Majanicho, a quaint hamlet nestled in a sheltered cove.
- El Cotillo - From there, the adventure follows the coastline along sandy trails to the fishing village of El Cotillo, a popular spot for surfers due to its impressive waves.
Unlike the coastlines to its north and south, El Cotillo beach features black volcanic sand. Visitors can explore the three-in-one lighthouse and the Toston tower for some memorable photos. There’s also free time to enjoy a meal or explore the village. The day concludes at a viewpoint to watch the sun set into the Atlantic while sipping on a chilled cava. The return drive under a star-lit sky is the perfect ending to the day.
