Exploring Gran Canaria’s Hidden Treasures: A Family Adventure
Eager to explore the hidden gems of Gran Canaria’s north coast, I embarked on a family-friendly adventure that promised both education and fun. Join me as I recount our journey through lush botanical gardens, a fascinating banana plantation, and the charming village of Firgas.
A Botanical Wonderland
Our adventure began with a slight hiccup as our bus was delayed, but the travel company was quick to respond, and soon we were on our way to the Jardin Botanico Viera & Clavijo. As a family of four, including my three children aged eleven, eight, and two, I was relieved to find the paths mostly accessible for our pushchair. The garden, nestled on a hillside, was a treasure trove of biodiversity, with over 2,000 plant species. My kids were fascinated by the towering cacti and palm trees, and the ponds provided a serene backdrop for our exploration. Although the top area was closed due to a rock slide, the garden’s charm was undeniable. The clean facilities were a blessing, especially with little ones in tow.
Bananas and Beyond
Next, we ventured to a nearby banana plantation, a short 20-minute drive away. The plantation was a hit with the kids, especially the play area complete with a trampoline and Wendy houses. We joined an English-speaking group and learned about the 13 varieties of plantains grown there. The tasting session was a highlight, with banana jams, wines, and liquors that delighted our taste buds. My children enjoyed the sweet jams, while I couldn’t resist purchasing some banana wine to take home. The plantation’s gravel paths were manageable with our pushchair, and the staff was accommodating, making it a pleasant experience for families.
Charming Firgas
Our final stop was the picturesque village of Firgas, known for its beautiful fountains and tiled mosaics depicting the Canary Islands. The village’s charm was enhanced by the presence of a lovely church and a playground where my kids could burn off some energy. We had packed a picnic lunch, which we enjoyed in the village’s quaint surroundings. The hour we spent in Firgas was a delightful end to our tour, offering a glimpse into the local culture and history. As we made our way back to San Agustin, the guide shared fascinating insights about the region, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for Gran Canaria’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
