Challenging but Worth It! - We had a really cool time on this hike and climb experience! Even though we’re in good shape, it was still physically challenging — but absolutely worth it. The views were breathtaking and the whole adventure felt special. Kevin, our guide, was great — super friendly, attentive, and full of interesting facts about Mauritius' history, nature, and wildlife. Just a heads-up: if you're not comfortable with steep climbs, have any medical conditions, or prefer an easier pace, it’s important to communicate that in advance. Pro tip: Wear solid hiking shoes! Definitely recommend this tour if you're up for a challenge!

Not so easy! - We took about 5-6 hours to complete this hike. It is definitely not something to undertake if you have knee problems. A decent amount of fitness is needed and you will spend a lot of time on both your hands and feet. Having a guide definitely made things a lot easier and safer. There is a potential to trip and fall especially as you get worn out and tired. This is where a guide comes in handy to keep you safe. After this hike we had aching legs for a good 3-4 days. It really was a rewarding climb and the views were lovely. Not a walk in the park and I wouldn't encourage children to do this hike.

The effort given for the ascent is worth it when you get to the top - After 2 hours of hiking including the last third very technical, what a pleasure to reach the summit, the view is magnificent. Some pictures taken up there next to the flag and the cross then you have to decide to go down, no other choice.

Disappointing handling of the situation – safety concerns if something goes wrong - We joined Kevin’s hike and want to be fully transparent about our experience - especially regarding safety. In our view, if a problem - or even an emergency - arises, Kevin is not able to anticipate it in time or follow appropriate safety protocols. Safety did not seem to be the priority; instead, the focus was on getting the group to the sunrise on time, even before resolving a safety issue. My wife has knee issues and needs to take things slowly - Kevin was informed of this before the start of the hike. The conditions weren’t ideal (though not bad): it had rained two days prior, and the rocks were slightly damp and dusty in places, making them a bit slippery. (In fact, our hotel had cancelled the tour for the day before due to these very conditions.) During the climbing section of the hike, my wife expressed concerns about continuing. Her concerns were dismissed with the remark that others with similar knee problems had managed the climb. This made it clear that Kevin planned to proceed with her regardless. In my opinion, a guide should take such signals seriously and assess risks accordingly. As a guest, I felt compelled to intervene, suggest that we stop, and help her down the climbing area. Kevin instructed her to step aside so the rest of the group could continue, and told us to wait in that section - without giving a return time, providing supervision, or establishing a means of communication. Focus was on clearly to make it on time to the sunrise. There was no safety protocol in place. I had to ask Kevin when he planned to return (response 2 hours) - and I also had to initiate to ensure we have communication. He didn’t check whether we had a working phone connection. Kevin would have had no idea if something had happened to us in these 2 hours. Given that this was a climbing section, with other hikers passing by and a risk of falling rocks, I also suggested we shouldn’t wait there. As soon as there was a bit of daylight, we carefully made our way out of the steep, rocky area before others came down. Once we reached easier terrain, I again informed Kevin that we were safe and on the way down. The climbing section was simply not a safe place to wait. For us, it felt like getting the group to the summit for sunrise was more important to Kevin than addressing this safety concern. Why not bring her down from the climbing section and link up with another upcoming guide before continuing? However, leaving guests alone and unsupervised in a climbing area for two hours - just to catch a sunrise - is, in our view, irresponsible for any professional guide. To be fair, he is a friendly guy, and if all goes well, you’ll have a great time - the hike itself is probably very beautiful. However, in our view he doesn’t respond well to criticism (we shared our critique on WhatsApp) and blames us as the guests, which I also find problematic. We think it's just not acceptable for a guide to blame guests for not being physically or mentally fit afterwards. And in the end, it doesn't matter - even the fittest person can run into unexpected issues in the climbing section. A responsible guide should take full ownership of the group’s safety - and never leave guests behind just to meet a sunrise. We feel it is important that others are aware in advance. For the other part of the group, it was a great experience; however, if something goes wrong for you as a guest, you will be the issue and don’t assume safety will be the top priority - even if that’s always stated. In our opinion, it doesn’t matter how fit, experienced, or certified a guide is - what truly matters is how they respond in challenging situations. Bottom line: Leaving guests unsupervised in a climbing section for two hours just to catch a sunrise is, in our view, unacceptable.
