Upon arrival, spend an hour at the volcano, which is situated at a high altitude of 1830 meters above sea level. Tangkuban Perahu, meaning “Overturned Boat,” offers breathtaking views and a refreshing, cool climate. The name is derived from a local legend about its formation, involving Dayang Sumbi and her son, Sangkuriang. This stratovolcano is located 30 km north of Bandung, the capital of West Java. It has erupted in the years 1826, 1829, 1842, 1846, 1896, 1910, 1926, 1929, 1952, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1983, 2013, and 2019. It is a popular tourist destination where visitors can hike to the crater’s edge to observe hot springs and boiling mud up close. The area features remnants of the ancient Sunda caldera, which collapsed after an eruption. While visiting, numerous shops offer souvenirs for purchase. Visitors can trek down and up to enjoy closer views of the smoky crater.
