Arrival in Bayan-Olgii Province, Journey to Altai Mountains
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Welcome to Olgii, the land of the magnificent Altai Mountains and the home of the last nomadic eagle hunters! At the airport, our local support team will greet you. This includes an English-speaking tour guide, a local driver with an off-road vehicle, and our personal expedition cook. Today, we will drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a journey that will take approximately six hours. Enjoy the breathtaking Altai Mountains. Upon arrival, we will set up camp and prepare for the next day’s trekking.
Trekking to the Base Camp
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - After breakfast, please pack your belongings and get ready for trekking. During the trip, all baggage and camping equipment will be transported by camels. You only need to carry essentials such as a lunchbox, water, a waterproof jacket, and other necessities for trekking. Today, we will trek to the Base Camp, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Altai Mountains, including the highest peak, Mt. Khuiten, and the Potanin Glacier. Have a wonderful day!
Climb to Malchin Peak 4050m / 13287ft
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will climb Malchin Peak, a favorite among travelers, offering a stunning view of the surrounding nature. The mountain is notable for being located right on the border between Russia and Mongolia. Climbing the mountain does not require special climbing gear, but good waterproof hiking boots are necessary. Near the top, there is snow, while the rest of the terrain is mainly rocky. The total climb takes around six to seven hours. Return to the camp.
Return to the Ranger Station
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will trek back to the National Park entrance, taking a different, more scenic and enjoyable trail along the White River. The river’s color is white due to mineral dust, and it is not drinkable. Enjoy the stunning white river with snow-capped mountains in the background. Stay at the campsite.
Trekking to Khar-Salaa
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - After breakfast, we will trek to Khar Salaa, meaning “Black Valley.” The White River Valley and Black Valley are neighboring valleys, both inhabited by nomadic Tuvan people, who have their own language and culture. They are renowned for their Shamanism beliefs and rituals. Today, we will visit a Tuvan family, allowing you to learn more about these fascinating people.
Trek into Bear Valley and Takhilt Pass
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Bear Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in the national park, accessible only a few months each year. First, we must cross the highest Takhilt Pass, where you can experience steep, high trails, leading down to Bear Valley. Several rivers need to be crossed, and without bridges, we must cross barefoot or make long jumps. Our guide will ensure the safest route. Enjoy the wild nature!
Camp by Khoton Lake
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, we will hike for about three to four hours and meet the driver at the end of the valley. Bid farewell to the camel herders and continue by car. The drive takes about two hours, arriving at a beautiful spot where you can enjoy swimming. Additionally, there is Biluu Hill, where you can appreciate the surrounding nature once you climb to the top. Khoton Lake is a pristine mountain lake with a breathtaking view.
Waterfall Valley Trek
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park - Today, you can wake up without rushing. We will relocate after lunch, with a half-hour drive to the next location. Please welcome the nomadic Kazakh eagle hunter’s family. Meet the local herders and be a guest of the family. In the afternoon, we will take a three-hour hike in Waterfall Valley, where you can enjoy a stunning valley with waterfalls. Return to the family and stay in a traditional yurt. You have the opportunity to learn more about their traditions.
Drive Back to Olgii City
Bayan-Olgii Province - Drive back to the province center, another long journey through the endless Altai Mountains. We will take a lunch break in Hovd Valley. Today, you will stay in a hotel in the town center. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant!
Fly Back to Ulaanbaatar
