Arrival in Lhasa
Lhasa - Depending on your arrival time, you may have some leisure time to enjoy in Lhasa. Our guides are eager to offer suggestions on how to make the most of your time in the city. After checking into your hotel, feel free to explore the city, visit nearby temples, shop, savor delicious Tibetan cuisine at local restaurants, or simply relax.
Most importantly, on your first day in Tibet, take it easy, enjoy your day, and allow time for acclimatization.
Downtown Lhasa: Potala Palace—Jokhang Temple—Barkhor Street
Potala Palace - The Potala Palace has been the residence of the Dalai Lamas since the 17th century. We will enter and spend about 1.5-2 hours from the entrance to the exit. During your visit, you will see many of its renowned artifacts.
Jokhang Temple - Next, we will proceed to the Jokhang Temple. Built in the 7th century, it houses the Jowo Shakyamuni Statue, depicting the 12-year-old Buddha before enlightenment. The statue, created during the historical Buddha’s lifetime, is adorned with gold, jewels, and precious stones.
Barkhor Street - After visiting the temple, we suggest taking a stroll around Barkhor Street.
Lhasa—Yamdrok Lake—Karola Glacier—Gyantse—Shigatse
Yamdrok Yumtso Lake - In the morning, depart from Lhasa and cross the 4990-meter-high Gangbala Pass. Travel along the old route to Yamdrok Lake, known as “Turquoise Lake” in Tibetan, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, celebrated as a heavenly lake. The lake, with its crystal-clear, sweet water resembling mutton fat, is drinkable. It was the filming location for the movie “Red River Valley.” The azure lake water blends seamlessly with distant snow-capped mountains. Along with colorful mountain ranges, unique Tibetan villages, and scattered herds of cattle and sheep, the journey is truly invigorating.
Shigatse—Lazi—Saga
Saga County - On the way, pass through areas with hot springs and misty hot spring regions. Alongside the road, observe the ever-changing colors of the lakes—blue, green, purple, gray, and yellow waters coexist peacefully, inviting you to linger and admire. The fault lakes and saltwater lakes mirror the azure sky. Wild protected animals such as wild donkeys, Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, yellow sheep, wild rabbits, and yellow ducks roam the grasslands, resembling a vivid classical ink painting. In the evening, we will stay overnight in Saga.
Saga—Zhongba—Darchen
Mount Kailash - After lunch, pass through the border inspection station at Mayum Bridge and head to the town of Tarqing, located below the sacred Mount Kailash. The main peak, Gang Rinpoche, stands at an elevation of 6638 meters. In Sanskrit, it is called “Meru,” meaning “the abode of Shiva,” while in Tibetan, it means “the mountain of gods.” Mount Kailash resembles a pyramid, with symmetrical walls on all four sides. It is universally recognized as a sacred mountain and is considered the center of the world by Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, the indigenous religion of Tibet, Bon, and Jainism. Stay overnight in Darchen.
