Visit Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery

Drepung Monastery, once home to over 10,000 monks, is the largest in Tibet, with impressive white buildings on the mountainside. Here, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, statues, and monastic life.

Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si) - Today, you will explore two distinctive temples in Lhasa: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery. You’ll visit the temple halls, monastic colleges, and the monks’ kitchen, and witness their unique debate style of learning Buddhist teachings.

Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple

Potala Palace - Today, let’s delve into Lhasa’s enchanting Tibetan treasures: the Potala Palace—once the residence of the Dalai Lamas and recognized as the highest palace in the world—and the wonders of Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, both designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Potala Palace, standing majestically on Red Hill in the center of Lhasa, was the religious and political hub of Tibet. Climb 365 steps to enter the main structure, the Red Palace, where you’ll visit the former Dalai Lamas’ political assembly hall, chapels, and stupa rooms, featuring exquisite murals and beautiful statues, representing the wealth and treasures of ancient Tibet.

Jokhang Temple - Jokhang Temple, home to a 12-year-old statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, is revered as the most sacred place in Tibet and a lifelong pilgrimage destination for Tibetans. Devout pilgrims come from afar to pay their respects.

Barkhor Street - Surrounding Jokhang Temple is Barkhor Street, where worshipers circumambulate in prayer. You can join them to experience the soul of the city. The guide will also take you to a local teahouse to enjoy the social culture of the Tibetan people.

Meditation Caves

Ganden Monastery - After lunch, you’ll head to Ganden Monastery, the birthplace of the Gelug school founded by Tsongkhapa and the oldest Yellow Sect monastery in Tibet. The temple complex covers the mountaintop and is truly grand. After exploring the monastery, join pilgrims on a circumambulation of the temple, which takes about 40 minutes. A simple meal will be prepared for you during the meditation session. Afterward, you will return to Lhasa.

Departure from Lhasa: Transfer to Airport/Train Station
