- Caral - The Caral Civilization, one of the world’s oldest, emerged in a region with diverse geographical features, thriving on a complementary fishing-agricultural economy and a complex interaction network. This network connected communities from the coast, mountains, and Andean jungle in Peru’s North-Central Region.
The Caral Civilization developed in the Americas almost simultaneously with ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China.
Unlike other civilizations that exchanged goods, knowledge, and experiences, the Caral Civilization advanced significantly in complete isolation from other populations. Caral was at least 1,800 years ahead of those in Mesoamerica, where another of the six globally recognized centers of civilization was located.
The Sacred City of Caral is situated at the beginning of the middle valley of the Supe River, north of Lima, at kilometer 184 of the Pan-American Highway.
- Caral - Known as the City of Integration, it linked coastal, highland (Sierra), and Amazonian communities, serving as a crucial hub in a regional exchange network.
Peñico was constructed at 600 meters above sea level on a ridge parallel to the river and a large alluvial fan. It is encircled by the Supe Valley and mountains over 1,000 meters high. The complex spans 22.05 hectares and is divided into two sections: one on a ridge, featuring buildings from various eras, with a sequence of pyramids and terraces associated with a sunken circular plaza.
Among the monumental structures in the center, one known as “B2” is prominent: research suggests this was the most significant in Peñico, where key administrative and ideological activities occurred. This is indicated by the presence of reliefs and designs of pututus, a musical instrument used in Andean societies to gather people or announce events.

For those eager to explore the origins of one of the world’s most ancient civilizations, a visit to Caral and Peñico in Peru promises an unparalleled journey. These extraordinary archaeological sites offer a glimpse into the past—over 4,000 years ago—when complex societies began to form in the Americas.
Caral, acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is the oldest known city in the Americas, dating back to approximately 3000 BCE. Featuring monumental pyramids, amphitheaters, and ceremonial spaces, Caral showcases remarkable urban planning and spiritual depth. It was a peaceful society founded on knowledge, trade, and environmental balance, predating the rise of the Inca civilization.
Recently made accessible to the public, Peñico continues Caral’s legacy. It functioned as a regional center, integrating highland, coastal, and Amazonian cultures. Known as the “City of Social Integration,” it played a crucial role in connecting diverse communities.
