- Chorrillos - Begin the day with a short 15-minute drive to Lima’s charming fisherman’s district. Start by exploring a quaint, local artisanal fish market and its pier, offering stunning coastal views. The guide will share insights into the daily lives of small-scale fishermen before embarking on a 20-minute boat ride, weather permitting.
From the boat, you’ll witness the striking contrast between the vibrant artisanal fishing boats, often occupied by pelicans, and the modern skyline of Miraflores in the distance. Just a few minutes in the opposite direction, you’ll feel far removed from one of South America’s largest cities, surrounded only by the vast Pacific Ocean and the desert landscape typical of the Peruvian coast. Onboard, the guide will narrate historical facts and stories about the sights.
- Morro Solar - Ascend Morro Solar hill, where, on a clear day, you can enjoy the most breathtaking views of Lima and the coastline. Occasionally, you might encounter Lima’s characteristic fog, ‘neblina’, offering a unique experience.
Your guide will explain why Morro Solar is also a significant historic site in Lima.
There’s more to discover here… While the one in Rio de Janeiro is more renowned, the Pacific version of the Christ statue on a hill offers an equally impressive view and story.
- Cementerio de Nueva Esperanza - After driving through various local neighborhoods, which are anything but dull with their lively street scenes, you’ll arrive at a truly unique location: the world’s second-largest cemetery.
It’s an awe-inspiring place, unlike any other cemetery you’ve visited before, nestled among sand hills and human settlements. You’ll have the opportunity to explore, and if you’re a photography enthusiast, you’ll capture many unique and artistic shots.
- San Juan De Miraflores - Next, head to the human settlement where a local cook has prepared a delightful lunch for your group. These settlements emerged from the late 20th-century migration towards the hills in Lima. Although these are Lima’s poorest neighborhoods, they are filled with hardworking individuals striving to provide a better future for their children. The visit emphasizes hope, optimism, and positive initiatives.
This part of the tour aims for responsible cultural immersion. You’ll engage with several locals, learning about daily life in this challenging environment and discovering efforts to improve the situation. We collaborate closely with the local community and an NGO led by locals, which runs several projects to enhance the lives of local children, teenagers, and mothers.
This tour is designed to be customized, considering the physical abilities of your group and your specific interests. On some tours, you’ll visit a workshop where a group of women has organized themselves into a small business, creating handicrafts sold as fair trade products. On other tours, you’ll see the ‘wall of shame’ that separates one of Lima’s poorest neighborhoods from one of the wealthiest. Every tour includes a traditional Peruvian lunch at a local family’s home. The local cook/mom is eager to learn about your background and will share her own stories in return. The perfect cultural immersion!
