These craters were formed during the “perfect eruption” of 2002, an extraordinary event that led to the destruction of the tourist station at Piano Provenzana, which was subsequently rebuilt in 2004.

The hike begins in this very area, offering stunning views of the summit craters throughout the journey. Participants are encouraged to pause occasionally during the ascent to appreciate the scenery, eventually reaching the Saponaria fields just before the 2002 crater system.
