Cruise ship passengers arriving at the port of Giardini Naxos, Taormina, have a wonderful opportunity to explore and be guided through some of the most remarkable extinct craters of Mount Etna. These craters were formed during the “perfect eruption” of 2002, an extraordinary event that led to the destruction of the tourist station at Piano Provenzana, which was subsequently rebuilt in 2004.
The hike begins in this very area, offering stunning views of the summit craters throughout the journey. Participants are encouraged to take breaks during the ascent, leading up to the Saponaria fields just before reaching the button-hole system of the 2002 craters. With the guidance of an experienced hiking guide, participants will discover various types of lava, learn about historical eruptions, and gain fascinating insights into the volcano.
