- Bairro Alto - In the late 15th century, Lisbon was bustling with people from around the globe due to the Age of Discovery. This led to the expansion of the city center, and what is now known as Camões Square was once one of the city’s entrances. Previously, the area was marked by the Fernandine Wall and the Santa Catarina Gate, where today, post-earthquake, stand two churches (Encarnação and Loreto). Beyond the wall were lands owned by wealthy noble families and, atop the hill, a cemetery for victims of the Black Plague. In 1506, King Manuel I requested a relic of Saint Roque from Venice and placed it in a hermitage near the cemetery. As the population grew and the Black Plague arrived, the less fortunate and the sick moved closer to the church. An urban plan was developed to accommodate these new residents.
- Largo do Carmo - The church and convent were constructed in 1389 after Nuno Álvares Pereira, a general aiding King John in repelling Castilian troops, vowed to build the world’s most beautiful church if victorious at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The Portuguese triumphed, and the general fulfilled his promise by funding the construction of a Carmelite church and convent. Upon its completion in 1423, he joined the Carmelite order and spent the remainder of his life in the convent.
