- MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a contemporary art museum in Lisbon, Portugal, that integrates three fields into a space for debate, discovery, critical thinking, and international dialogue. It is located in the Belém area, next to the Tagus River, on land reclaimed by Lisbon from the river at the end of the 19th century. This area is one of the city’s most historically monumental zones, featuring landmarks such as the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Cultural Center, the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Palace and Museum of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, and the National Rope Factory.
- Belém Tower - Strategically built on the north bank of the Tagus River between 1514 and 1520 to defend Lisbon’s harbor, it is one of the architectural jewels of King Manuel I’s reign.
The architectural ensemble can be divided into two distinct parts, models of military architecture: the medieval keep and the modern bastion, which, with two levels for artillery fire, allowed for longer-range, skimming, and ricochet shots over the water.
It is a cultural reference, a symbol of the country’s uniqueness through privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilizations. This status was confirmed in 1983 when UNESCO classified it as a “Cultural Heritage of all Humanity.”
- Monument to the Discoveries - Isolated and prominent on the embankment by the Tagus, the Monument to the Discoveries evokes Portuguese overseas expansion, synthesizes a glorious past, and symbolizes the greatness of Prince Henry the Navigator’s work, the driving force behind the discoveries.
A stylized caravel sets sail, with Prince Henry the Navigator at the bow, accompanied by 32 key figures of the overseas saga and the culture of the time, including navigators, cartographers, warriors, colonizers, evangelizers, chroniclers, and artists, each depicted with symbols that individualize them.
- Belém Cultural Center - CCB - The Belém Cultural Center is located in the Praça do Império.
It was originally designed to host the headquarters of the Portuguese presidency of the European Community and later to develop cultural activities.
- Jerónimos Monastery - The Jerónimos Monastery has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and, in 1983, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with the Belém Tower. On July 7, 2007, it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Closely linked to the Portuguese Royal House and the epic of the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery has long been internalized as one of the nation’s symbols.
- Belém Palace - Once a royal palace, it is now a national monument and the seat of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.
