- Parque das Nações - Merely 15 days following the conclusion of World Expo-98, “Parque das Nações” emerged at the exhibition site. Through urban rehabilitation, this once neglected and rugged area transformed into Lisbon’s most prestigious district.
It boasts modern architecture, featuring cultural and business venues from the Expo: the Vasco da Gama Tower, the Meo Arena (formerly Atlantic Pavilion), the Camoes Theater, the Oceanarium, the Lisbon pavilions, and the Lisbon International Fair (FIL).
The area is directly connected to the city center by Metro and train. Today, this new neighborhood in the eastern part of the city is home to a predominantly young, upper-middle-class population with excellent educational facilities. A remarkable success, isn’t it?
- Alfama - As Lisbon’s oldest historical neighborhood, Alfama is an ancient Medina with narrow streets and small rows. During the Arab period from the 8th to the 12th century, it served as a perfect defensive system.
After the Christian reconquest, the Morisco population of Alfama relocated to the “Mouraria” quarter. Discover the enigmatic Alfama – a place rich in Portuguese history and authenticity. The most distinctive and charismatic Portuguese music, Fado, originated here in this humble quarter. It is imbued with the Portuguese melancholy known as “saudade.”
- Cidade Baixa - Baixa, Lisbon’s downtown, is a must-visit. The architecture of this area reveals the impact of the devastating earthquake of 1755. The disaster altered the Portuguese mindset and city planning approach. Marquis de Pombal, the statesman responsible for Lisbon’s reconstruction, anticipated future catastrophes by designing wider streets and squares. Economic and social changes also emerged post-earthquake.
- Lisbon Cathedral - Saint Anthony’s Church was constructed in the 12th century by the order of D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. It is located near the Lisbon Cathedral at St. Anthony’s birthplace. An ancient mosque once stood here before the city was captured by Christians. The church has been damaged by earthquakes in Lisbon and has been remodeled over the years to appear as it does today.
- Torre de Belém - Belém, or Bethlehem, is a delightful area to the west of central Lisbon. It is a key landmark with historic monuments, fascinating museums, and beautiful gardens, all bordered by the refreshing waves of the Tejo River.
This is where Lisbon’s harbors and shipyards were located. From here, Portuguese seamen of the 15th-16th centuries set sail to explore sea routes worldwide. This was Portugal’s glorious Golden Age, with wealth flowing into Lisbon from the colonies.
Modern travelers must visit the “Jerónimos” Monastery, built in the 16th century. Another renowned landmark is the Belém Tower – an outstanding fortress and a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture. And, of course, the explorers’ monument on the Tejo Estuary is a must-see.
- Belém - The Pasteis de Belém factory is a century-old pastry shop, preserving the tradition of crafting exquisite Portuguese sweets. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit and savor this exceptional culinary delight.
- Parque Eduardo VII - At the summit of “Parque Eduardo VII,” named in honor of the English king, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. It is the perfect spot to understand why Lisbon is called the city of the seven hills and the reason behind the name “Baixa” of Lisbon. Here, discussions about the Portugal/England relationship, with all their treaties and alliances, and the English influence on transforming the Portuguese colony Brazil into a new independent state, are held.
- Chiado - The tour concludes on another Lisbon hill. There is an encounter with two districts that are both similar and distinct. The Chiado neighborhood is a hub of art and culture, home to the majority of Lisbon’s theaters and some of the oldest bookstores in the modern world. Bairro Alto is renowned as the city’s most bohemian quarter. On weekends, its crossroads are filled with hundreds of young people enjoying their leisure time.
