- Palacio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - Palacio Nacional de Queluz
Museums and Palaces
The Palace of Queluz and its gardens are among the finest examples of late 18th-century Portuguese architecture.
Commissioned by Pedro III, the husband of D. Maria I (1734-1816), and used as a royal residence, this palace is a prime example of late 18th-century Portuguese architecture.
It is further enhanced by a significant museum of decorative art, with collections primarily from the royal family, displayed in a fitting environment. Many rooms feature rocaille-style decorations, such as the splendid Throne Room, adorned with mirrors and exquisite carved gilded woodwork.
The surrounding gardens are adorned with fountains and ornamental ponds, where water gracefully flows from mythological figures. The sculpture group around the Neptune Basin is particularly striking.
- Sintra National Palace - Sintra National Palace
Museums and Palaces
The Sintra National Palace stands out among Portugal’s royal medieval palaces and is the most prominent building in the village of Sintra.
Since the country’s earliest dynasties, Sintra has been a favored retreat for Portuguese royalty. The current palace was initiated by Dom Joao I and later enriched by Dom Manuel I, who enhanced its decorative features and added a new wing.
Visitors can explore the palace’s interior to learn more about Portugal’s history. The decoration is remarkable, blending various artistic styles reflecting the tastes of the kings who resided here, with rooms named accordingly. Notable rooms include the Swan Room, the Armory Room, the Magpie Room, the Reading Room, and the chapel.
- Palacio Nacional de Mafra - Palacio Nacional e Convento de Mafra
Museums and Palaces
The grandeur of the architectural design of the palace, convent, and basilica of Mafra reflects the opulence of King Joao V’s court (1707-1750). King João V commissioned this landmark of the Portuguese Baroque era, designed by Frederico Ludovice, who drew inspiration from Italian architectural styles.
As the royal family’s summer residence, the Palace houses various collections featuring works by Portuguese, Italian, and French artists commissioned by the royal family, including Baroque paintings and sculptures, religious vestments and ornaments, and mural paintings by renowned Portuguese artists such as Cirilo Volkmar Machado and Domingos Sequeira.
The Basilica is home to a unique set of six organs, complemented by two carillons with a total of 114 bells - 57 in each tower.
