The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima was established in response to the call of Our Lady of the Rosary, first mentioned on August 13, 1917, and explicitly requested during the apparition on October 13 of that year to Lucia de Jesus, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto: “I want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honor. I am the Lady of the Rosary” (First Memoir of Sister Lucia). The small chapel was built in 1919 at the site of the 1917 apparitions at Cova da Iria, and since then, the Shrine has developed in response to a significant influx of pilgrims.

The Shrine of Fatima is a pilgrimage site that commemorates its founding event, the apparitions of Our Lady to the three young shepherds. Providing pastoral hospitality to pilgrims is a key aspect of its mission.

The Shrine of Fatima preserves the memory of the event and the message of Fatima. It is dedicated to studying and spreading this message, serving as a means of evangelization in Portugal and around the world.

The Shrine of Fatima is, by the expressed will of the Apostolic See, a National Shrine.

• Forte de Sao Miguel - The construction of this Mannerist-style monument began during the reign of D. Sebastião in 1577, with the aim of defending the cove from attacks by Algerian, Moroccan, Dutch, and Norman pirates who targeted the Atlantic coast. In 1644, due to its strategic position, King D. João IV, known as the Restorer, ordered its renovation and expansion. As a vigilant guardian of the fortress, S. Miguel Archangel, the patron of many sanctuaries typically built in elevated locations, was chosen. On the façade of the fort, at the entrance portal, D. João IV placed a limestone image of San Miguel Arcanjo, with the inscription “ELREY DOM JUAN-1644,” marking the year of its construction.
• Obidos Village - The medieval village of Óbidos is one of the most picturesque and well-preserved in Portugal.

Located close to the capital and situated on a high point near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos held strategic importance in the region. Already inhabited before the Romans arrived on the Iberian Peninsula, the village gained prosperity when it was chosen by the royal family. Since King D. Dinis gifted it to his wife D. Isabel in the 13th century, it belonged to the House of the Queens, who, throughout various dynasties, enhanced and enriched it. This is one of the main reasons for the abundance of churches in this small town.

Within its walls, visitors find a well-preserved castle and a maze of streets and white houses that captivate anyone who strolls through them. Among Manueline porticoes, flower-adorned windows, and small openings, there are numerous reasons to visit, showcasing excellent examples of the religious and civil architecture from the village’s golden age.
