• Buckingham Palace - Since 1837, Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the UK’s monarchs and currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. • St. James’s Palace - St. James’s Palace has been the backdrop for significant events in Royal history, serving as a residence for the Kings and Queens of England for over 300 years until Queen Victoria’s reign.
• Houses of Parliament - Officially known as the Palace of Westminster, it is the meeting place for both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the UK Parliament. • Westminster Abbey - The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs, as well as the venue for 16 Royal weddings. The current church was begun by Henry III in 1245. It is one of the most significant Gothic buildings in the country, featuring the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint at its core. Today, it remains a church dedicated to regular worship and the celebration of major national events. Westminster Abbey, or the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster, is a “Royal Peculiar” under the jurisdiction of a Dean and Chapter, accountable only to the Sovereign and not to any archbishop or bishop.
• Downing Street - The residence of the British Prime Minister since 1732.
• Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall - The original and official entrance to both St James’s Palace and Buckingham Palace. A Guard is mounted here by members of the Household Cavalry, either the Blues and Royals or the Lifeguards (Kings Troop in July) – the Guard changes daily at 11 am.
• Trafalgar Square - Established on the former Royal Mews of Whitehall Palace in 1830, these buildings were demolished for the Charing Cross Improvement scheme, which led to the creation of Trafalgar Square and a lasting memorial to Lord Horatio Nelson, who was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
