• Los Angeles River - The LA River is more than just a backdrop for iconic movie scenes like those in Grease or Terminator 2. This river boasts a captivating (and occasionally daunting) history. This tour will guide you through the LA River’s past, present, and future, enhancing your appreciation of this essential waterway.

The river is also an excellent spot for cycling, dining, or bird watching. By the end of the tour, you’ll discover the best locations for each activity.

• Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park (formerly Marsh Park) - At our meeting point, we will explore the efforts of those who fought to make the river accessible. What began with a pair of wire cutters and a rock ‘n’ roll attitude evolved into the Friends of the LA River Organization. Walking or biking along the river wasn’t always possible as it is today. The river is undergoing a transformation, and the Friends of the LA River Organization have played a crucial role in its recent development.
• Corralitas Red Car Trail - Did you know LA once had an excellent public transportation system? It may sound surprising, but it’s true. Here, you’ll stroll along an abandoned stretch of old trolley car lines and learn how one of the world’s best transportation systems was lost.
• Echo Park - This is where the hike truly begins. You’ll ascend into the hills, using hidden stairs and forgotten paths. There’s stunning early 1900s architecture and views of LA landmarks like the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory. Echo Park is one of LA’s oldest neighborhoods, and the hills provided seclusion for occult organizations and self-sustaining religious compounds. The stairs, hills, and trails all lead to a secret swing with a fantastic view of the LA River and LA’s Eastside.
• Elysian Valley - The final stretch brings us back to the LA River. In this last section, you’ll witness the emergence of new restaurants, shops, spas, apartments, and pocket parks along the river. Los Angeles has ambitious plans for the future of the LA River. What we see now is just the beginning of a $1.6 billion plan to revitalize and renaturalize the LA River. Who knows what the LA River will look like 100 years from now? It could be as unfamiliar to us as our river would be to the Indigenous people of LA 500 years ago.
• Spoke - One of LA’s top spots for breakfast or lunch. It’s a perfect place to visit before or after the tour. You can also rent a bike here and spend more time by the LA River.
