Throughout the year, a variety of events such as Easter in the City, Estival Jazz, Blues to Bop, Autumn Festival, and Christmas in the Square are hosted here. Historically, when it was known as Piazza Grande, the square was a venue for political events. On February 15, 1798, a tumultuous battle occurred, ending with the Lugano partisans successfully repelling the enemy. The most progressive members of the bourgeoisie seized the opportunity to secure long-desired independence for the town, inspired by the slogan “Free and Swiss.” In Zurich, the twelve cantons declared Canton Ticino’s independence, and on February 16, citizens erected the tree of liberty in Piazza Grande. In 1830, the square was renamed following a constitutional reform.
- Lake Lugano - Enjoy a brief cruise on Lake Ceresio from the heart of Lugano to the quaint port of Cassarate, offering a moment of relaxation with stunning views.
- Monte Bre - Revel in the beauty of Monte Rosa, the Bernese, and Vallese Alps as seen from the summit of Switzerland’s sunniest mountain.
Since 1908, a cable railway has transported visitors in just fifteen minutes from Cassarate to Mount Bré (933 meters above sea level), a destination offering numerous attractions: a large, well-equipped picnic area perfect for grilling, family-friendly walks, and more challenging mountain hikes.
The village of Bré has preserved its ancient rural charm, and over time, has been adorned with numerous artworks. Visitors can admire works by Pasquale Gilardi, also known as Lelèn, frescoes by Joseph Birò in the Church of San Fedele, the Schmid Museum featuring works left by the artist to his adopted municipality, and an open-air museum showcasing pieces by Aligu Sassu, Armando Losa, Emilio Rissone, Giuliano Togni, Giancarlo Tamagni, Piergiorgio Piffaretti, and others.
Additionally, there are restaurants and small and large grotti with panoramic terraces offering a bird’s eye view of Lake Lugano and its surrounding mountains.
- Contrada Gedra 6 - The town of Brè has retained its ancient rural village characteristics and has gradually enriched itself with numerous artistic works.
The decoration of the town center with various artworks aims to introduce a wider audience to this charming village, where artists like Pasquale Gilardi (1885-1934), Wilhelm Schmid (1892-1971), and Josef Birò (1887-1975) once lived. The artistic path begins in the square in front of the church, winds through the center of Brè, and offers visitors the chance to admire artworks by renowned artists, both nationally and internationally. Besides the town’s artistic decoration, Brè offers many other notable works of art. The Wilhelm Schmid Museum, the house where the artist lived (1892-1971), hosts a significant collection of works by the only Swiss painter who was an exponent of “Magic Nordic Realism.”
There are also several restaurants and grotti with panoramic terraces providing a superb view of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. The Mount Brè region offers countless itineraries for both hikers and mountain bike enthusiasts, varying greatly in beauty and difficulty.
