- Longmen Grottoes - The Longmen Grottoes, also known as Longmen Caves, are situated between Mount Xiang and Mount Longmen, overlooking the Yi River. Alongside Yungang Caves and Mogao Caves, they are considered one of China’s three most renowned treasure troves of stone inscriptions.
Who constructed the Longmen Grottoes? Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty initiated their construction around the year 493 when he relocated the capital to Luoyang. The development of the Longmen Caves continued over 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The scenic area features over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 dagobas, 1,300 caves, and 100,000 statues. Most of these are creations from the Northern Wei Dynasty and the prosperous Tang Dynasty (618-907). The site preserves a wealth of historical materials related to art, music, religion, calligraphy, medicine, costume, and architecture.
- Monastero Shaolin (Shaolin Temple) - Shaolin Temple was founded in 495 A.D. at the western base of Songshan Mountain, 13 kilometers northwest of Dengfeng City, Henan Province. Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-557) commissioned the temple to house the Indian master Batuo (Buddhabhadra). Shaolin Temple translates to “temple in the dense forests of Shaoshi Mountain.”
As the first Shaolin abbot, Batuo (Buddhabhadra) dedicated himself to translating Buddhist scriptures and teaching doctrines to his numerous followers. Later, another Indian monk, Bodhidharma, arrived at Shaolin Temple, reputedly crossing the Yangtze River on a reed. He spent nine years meditating in a cave on Wuru Peak and founded the Chinese Chan tradition at Shaolin Temple. Consequently, Bodhidharma is revered as the first Patriarch of Chan Buddhism. Since Chinese Kungfu also originated from Shaolin Temple, it is acknowledged as the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the cradle of Kungfu.
- Pagoda Forest of Shaolin Temple - Unexpectedly, visitors encounter the Pagoda Forest, a burial ground for Buddhist dignitaries throughout history. The pagodas typically stand less than 15 meters (about 49 feet) tall. The layers and shape of a pagoda are influenced by various factors, including one’s Buddhist status, achievements, and prestige during their lifetime. The Pagoda Forest here is the largest pagoda complex in China.
