The Longmen Grottoes, along with the Yungang Caves and Mogao Caves, are considered the three most renowned treasure troves of stone inscriptions in China. UNESCO has praised the Longmen Grottoes as the zenith of Chinese stone carving art, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in November 2000. The construction of the Longmen Grottoes began around 493 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty when Emperor Xiaowen relocated the capital to Luoyang. The construction spanned over 400 years, continuing until the Northern Song Dynasty. It extends approximately 1,000 meters from north to south and includes over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 dagobas, 1,300 caves, and nearly 110,000 statues.
