- Museo de Sitio y Santuario Arqueológico de Pachacamac - Undoubtedly, Pachacamac stands as one of the most significant archaeological sites along Peru’s coast. It features elements dating back to 200 AD. As each successive culture contributed their own temples, the site contains remnants from various ancient cultures, both pre-Inca and Inca. Today, Pachacamac is home to the remains of over 50 temples, making it the largest archaeological complex in Lima.
During the Pachacamac tour, the guide will first take you through the museum, showcasing numerous artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations. Following this, the driver will guide you around the expansive site, stopping at various points of interest. At some stops, a short walk is necessary to fully appreciate the temple remains. In addition to the archaeological wonders, the tour offers stunning views of the surrounding area, including the Pacific Ocean. It’s remarkable to think this is so close to the bustling city of Lima.
- Ichimay Wari - After exploring Pachacamac, the tour continues to a nearby local neighborhood, home to many artisans from Ayacucho. These individuals relocated to the outskirts of Lima to escape the violence of the guerrilla war during the 1980s and 1990s. The guide will provide insights into this challenging period in Peru’s history.
In this community, local artisans continue to craft traditional handicrafts and art from Ayacucho. Before visiting some of their workshops, you’ll enjoy lunch with one of these artisan families in their home. Afterward, with a satisfied appetite, you’ll explore several workshops where textiles, ceramics, and other exquisite Peruvian handicrafts are created. The artisans are eager to showcase their work and explain the process behind these artistic creations. In an area where government presence is minimal, these individuals have established their own community, fostering and sustaining the local economy through their traditions and art. They are dedicated to preserving their cultural heritage.
Certainly, visitors will leave this place feeling inspired and perhaps with a few authentic, fair-trade souvenirs (entirely optional, of course).
