Constructed during the Ptolemaic Kingdom between 237 and 57 BC, the Temple of Horus at Edfu is widely acknowledged as the best-preserved of the Ancient Egyptian sanctuaries. For 200 years, it lay buried under nearly 40 feet (12 meters) of desert sand and Nile silt, which remarkably preserved it in near-perfect condition!
- Kom Ombo Temple - The name of the site derives from the Arabic word ‘kum’ meaning ‘mound,’ a term common in the names of many archaeological sites, and ‘Ombo,’ which ultimately comes from the ancient Egyptian Nubt, interpreted as ‘the golden (city).’ The city’s temple is dedicated to two deities: the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Har wer (Horus the Elder).
- Philae Temple - Philae, an island in the Nile River between the old Aswan Dam and the Aswan High Dam, in Aswān governorate, southern Egypt. Its ancient Egyptian name was P-aaleq; the Coptic-derived name Pilak (“End,” or “Remote Place”) likely refers to its marking the boundary with Nubia. The conventional name (Philae) is Greek, but locally the site is known as Qaṣr Anas al-Wujūd, named after a hero from The Thousand and One Nights.
- Temple of Khnum - The Temple of Khnum at Esna, also known as the Temple of Esna, is dedicated to the god Khnum, his consorts Menhit and Nebtu, their son Heka, and the goddess Neith. It is remarkable for its beautiful location and magnificent architecture. The Temple of Esna reflects the importance Ancient Egyptians placed on their places of worship. All Egyptians entering an Egyptian temple were required to “comply with the strict rules regarding ritual purity.”
- Philae Temple - The Philae Temple, a stunning gem saved from rising waters, is dedicated to the goddess Isis. Its beautifully preserved shrines and intricate carvings make it a must-see.
