- Colossi of Memnon - Two impressive twin statues depicting Pharaoh Amenhotep III, along with two smaller statues at their feet (one representing his wife and the other his mother), stand majestically against the stunning Luxor skyline. Each statue, standing 60 feet tall, marks the entrance to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple. They are famously known as the Colossi of Memnon due to a sound phenomenon caused by one of the statues after an earthquake. Originally constructed in the Theban Necropolis on the west bank of the Nile River in what is now Luxor, these colossal statues, made of quartzite sandstone believed to have been quarried at El-Gabal el-Ahmar near modern Cairo and transported 420 miles overland to ancient Thebes, have endured for thousands of years.
