• Hoffnungsthal - Hoffnungsthal, meaning Valley of Hope, was once a German pioneer settlement established in 1847. It was situated in a temporary lagoon that remained dry during the initial years of settlement. Despite warnings from the local Peramangk people about the area’s susceptibility to flooding, the settlers did not heed this advice. In October 1853, following a week of intense spring rainfall, the village experienced flooding, leading to the evacuation of many homes. The cost of constructing a drainage system was deemed too high, resulting in the village being abandoned. Most settlers relocated to the Barossa village of Bethanien and other distant areas.
