- City Hall of Maastricht - The Market is dominated by the town hall, a fine example of Dutch classicism. During its 17th-century construction, several other buildings, including a few houses, the Lakenhal, the Belfry, and part of the first city wall, were demolished. This resulted in a more or less square market square with the town hall at its center. Visitors are welcome to explore the interior.
- Dinghuis - Built in the 15th century, the Dinghuis has served various purposes over the years, hosting both people and animals. It may be the only building in Maastricht with such a diverse history of use. The exterior doesn’t reveal all its secrets, as many attractions are hidden both inside and outside. The clock at the front is notable, with its chain running over several floors. Discover the hidden gems of this historic building.
- Onze Lieve Vrouw Sterre der Zee Basiliek - The Basilica of Our Lady, partly constructed with marl blocks, dates back to the 10th century and is unique due to its dim lighting. Inside, a treasury holds significant religious artifacts, including richly embroidered chasubles, church silver, and relics. The church is a popular spot for lighting candles, with about 9,000 lit weekly. It is the only church in Europe with its main entrance in a side aisle.
- De Helpoort - Here stands the oldest city wall of Maastricht, the O-L-Vrouwewal, dating from around 1250. It was part of a 2.5 km long city wall with numerous gates and a defense tower. The Helpoort, built alongside this wall, is the oldest tower in Maastricht. Its name, meaning ‘Hell Gate,’ is linked to a house called ‘in hell,’ and the street behind the gate was once a red-light district.
- Pater Vincktoren - This beautiful tower is not part of the same wall as the Helpoort, as it was constructed a century later. The tower is a partial reconstruction named after Father Vinck, who was executed in 1638 for allegedly aiding the Spanish in conquering Maastricht.
- Monument Fons Olterdissen - Fons Olterdissen, a writer, poet, and director from Maastricht, was born in 1865 and passed away in 1923. His work is among the most renowned in Maastricht, and the final chorus of his comic opera Trijn de Begijn has been the official Maastricht anthem since 2002. His statue is located near the university buildings.
- Huys Op Den Jeker - The 17th-century Huys op den Jeker showcases the typical Maasland architectural style of that era. Due to limited space within the city, houses were sometimes built over streams, as seen here. The door frame, made of bluestone and dated 1733, was relocated during restoration. The window above the door is original. A notable feature is the residents’ cleanliness, as they had a ‘privy’ built, which, as was customary, ended above the Jeker.
- Vrijthof - The Vrijthof is a prominent square in the heart of Maastricht, the largest in the capital of Limburg. It is renowned for its many monuments, including a unique ‘church twin,’ cultural facilities, annual events, and numerous café terraces. The Vrijthof’s history is unique in the Netherlands due to its continuous use since Roman times.
- Bonnefanten Museum - The Bonnefanten is a visual arts museum in Maastricht, the capital of Limburg. It is one of three provincial museums in Limburg, known for its contemporary art exhibitions, medieval sculpture collections, and Southern Netherlandish paintings. The focus is on conceptualism, arte povera, and American minimalism.
