- Fundación Loros | Loros Wildlife Sanctuary - This is not a typical horseback tour. It is the sole route in Colombia that concludes at an active macaw release site, where rescued birds embark on their first free flight after extensive rehabilitation. Participants travel on horseback through 500 acres of tropical dry forest, located just an hour from Cartagena.
The journey includes 13 stations along “El Camino a la Libertad”: enjoying breakfast by the lake, preparing fruit for over 200 birds in rehabilitation, strolling through the aviaries, encountering the endemic White-headed Capuchin Tamarin, riding to Cerro El Peligro where macaws soar freely, harvesting yuca with local farmers, planting a native tree, and receiving a Rewilding Certificate.
Fundación Loros is Colombia’s exclusive psittacine rehabilitation center. Each visitor contributes directly to the release of macaws and parrots back into the wild — with over 60 birds freed and more than 20,000 trees planted.
Important: Direct contact or feeding of animals is not allowed. All activities are overseen by trained foundation staff. This is an operational rehabilitation center, not a zoo.
