Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro had always been a dream of mine, and the opportunity to experience the [
] was one I couldn’t pass up. With the incredible guidance of Colman and Humphrey, this adventure became a transformative journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories.
The Journey Begins: A Dream Realized
As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, the idea of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro had always been a distant dream. The allure of the mountain, with its snow-capped peaks and rich biodiversity, called to me year after year. Finally, the opportunity presented itself, and I found myself at the Machame Gate, ready to embark on the Kilimanjaro Trek with a group of fellow adventurers.
Our guides, Colman and Humphrey, greeted us with warm smiles and an infectious energy that set the tone for the entire journey. Their knowledge of the mountain and its surroundings was evident from the start, as they shared stories of the local culture and wildlife that I was so eager to capture through my lens. As we trekked through the mystical, moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest, I felt a sense of awe and gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique landscape.
The first day was a gentle introduction to the trek, with the forest gradually giving way to heathers, tall grasses, and wildflowers. The views of Kibo Peak in the distance were a constant reminder of the challenge that lay ahead, but with Colman and Humphrey by our side, I felt confident and excited for the journey to come.
The Ascent: Challenges and Triumphs
The trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp was a test of endurance and determination. The uphill sections were challenging, but the breathtaking views of the plains and forests below, and the commanding Kibo and Mawenzi peaks above, made every step worthwhile. As we gained altitude, the vegetation changed dramatically, with the famous high-altitude plants of Kilimanjaro making their appearance.
Colman and Humphrey were more than just guides; they were motivators, medics, and friends. Their leadership was impeccable, and their ability to anticipate our needs and keep our spirits high was truly remarkable. When the altitude began to take its toll, their gentle reminders of “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) helped us adjust and continue our ascent.
Reaching the Shira Plateau was a significant milestone, and the sense of camaraderie among our group was palpable. We celebrated with laughter and stories, feeling a deep connection to each other and the mountain. The journey to Barranco Camp was equally rewarding, with the barren landscape offering a stark beauty that was both humbling and inspiring.
The Summit: A Transformative Experience
The final ascent to Uhuru Peak was the most challenging part of the trek, but also the most rewarding. We began our climb around midnight, guided by the light of our headlamps and the unwavering support of Colman and Humphrey. The trail was steep and demanding, but their encouragement and calm presence were exactly what we needed to keep going.
As we reached Stella Point and continued to Uhuru Peak, the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. Standing at the “Roof of Africa,” surrounded by the breathtaking views of the mountain, crater, clouds, and glaciers, was a moment I will carry with me forever. It was a testament to the power of perseverance, teamwork, and the incredible leadership of our guides.
The descent to Mweka Camp was filled with reflection and gratitude. Colman and Humphrey had turned a challenging hike into a transformative adventure, and by the time we reached the base, it felt like we were saying goodbye to family. Their genuine care and dedication had made the journey not just a trek, but a life-changing experience.
For anyone considering the Kilimanjaro Trek, I cannot recommend Colman and Humphrey enough. They are legends in their own right, and their ability to guide with heart, humor, and incredible strength is unparalleled. This adventure was not just about reaching the summit, but about the journey, the people, and the memories that will last a lifetime.
