Machame - The first day of trekking begins at Machame Gate, which is typically an hour’s drive from Moshi. Here, the entrance to the Machame route awaits. At the gate, trekkers will meet their trekking team, including the guide, porters, and cook. There will be a buzz of activity as porters organize the gear for the trek, and park formalities are completed. The initial part of the route ascends steadily, passing through a stunning, dense rainforest. This trail is less frequently traveled, so it can become somewhat overgrown in areas and is often wet and muddy underfoot.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Shira Camp - The trek becomes relatively steep as trekkers enter the low alpine zone, characterized by moorlands and grasslands. Shira Camp 2 is situated on a plateau, offering the first views of Kibo to the northwest and Mount Meru to the east.
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park - On day three, the trek continues on high moorland, and the landscape transforms the entire character of the journey. The day is spent at altitude (up to 4600m). Although the day ends at a similar elevation to the start at Shira Camp, it is considered one of the most crucial days of the trek as it allows trekkers to climb high and sleep low, which is vital for proper acclimatization.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp - Day four begins with a descent into the start of the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. Trekkers then exit steeply, ascending the Great Barranco Wall, which separates them from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. From here, there is a steep ascent from Karanga Valley to the night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp - Day five marks summit night (and day)! The trek begins around midnight. The views are breathtaking. Trekkers should reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun appear. The descent begins by returning to Stella Point and then descending on a scree slope.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
Uhuru Peak - Day six is summit night. The trek starts around midnight, with a steep ascent to the summit glaciers. Trekkers will climb scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining significant height over a short distance, before finally heading down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
