In 1884, Christian builders discovered the remains of a Byzantine church on their construction site. Among the debris, having withstood intentional destruction, fire, and neglect, they found a floor mosaic of extraordinary importance: it remains the oldest map of Palestine and offers numerous historical insights into the region.
• St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church - Explore the historic Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist, featuring a stunning Bell Tower that offers a breathtaking view of Madaba. Visit its underground museum dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. There is also free time to explore a mosaic workshop, if interested.
• Mount Nebo - The La Storia Tourism Complex is located on Mount Nebo. Visitors will spend 2 hours touring the museum, which provides information on the religious history of Mount Nebo and the surrounding area. The museum is currently working on a project to create the world’s largest mosaic, measuring 30 meters long with 3.5 million pieces. The mosaic will illustrate the entire route of the King’s Highway, and visitors can participate by placing a piece into the mosaic. The museum also offers a variety of workshops for visitors of all ages.
