- Royal Palace of Madrid - The Royal Palace is located on the site of the former Alcázar of Madrid, a medieval fortress that was transformed into a grand palace by Juan II, Carlos V, and Felipe II, who made it the official residence of the Spanish Monarchy in 1561. The Alcázar was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 1734.
Felipe V decided to construct a new Royal Palace on this site, hiring Europe’s leading architect at the time, Filippo Juvarra. After Juvarra’s death in 1736, his student Giambattista Sacchetti made several modifications to the ambitious project. The entire structure is composed of a series of domes built without any wood and features multiple floors to house all administrative offices, Crown officials, and servants.

- La Latina - The narrow, winding streets of this irregularly designed area, mostly dating back to the Middle Ages, typically lead to a square. Many of these streets were outside the medieval walled village and provided lodging for numerous merchants who sold their goods at the market. This commercial tradition is still reflected in several street and square names, such as Plaza de la Cebada (Barley Square), where the farmers’ market was held, Plaza de los Carros (Carriage Square), Plaza de la Paja (Straw Square), and El Rastro, the city’s most famous flea market.

- Barrio de Las Letras - In the seventeenth century, the Golden Age of Spanish Literature, renowned authors like Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Tirso de Molina, and Góngora lived here, giving the neighborhood its name. Some streets in this area honor this and other illustrious chapters of Spanish history, culture, and art.

- Paseo del Prado - Known as the Golden Triangle of Art, Paseo del Arte (Art Walk in English) features three of the world’s finest art collections along a 2-kilometer stretch. This includes the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Collection, and the Reina Sofía Museum.
Paseo del Arte runs along the wide, tree-lined boulevard of Paseo del Prado and some of the streets that intersect it. Together with Paseo de Recoletos and Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo del Prado forms a long line that extends north to south through the city.
Once an open green space near the San Jerónimo el Real monastery – ‘prado’ means ‘meadow’ in Spanish – the area of the long avenue we see today witnessed the construction of the Buen Retiro Palace, commissioned by King Philip IV.

- Parque del Retiro - Spanning over 125 hectares and featuring more than 15,000 trees, El Retiro Park is a green oasis in the city’s heart. It boasts various interesting monuments and gardens, including the Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez (Andalusian-inspired classical gardens), the Rosaleda rose garden, and the Parterre Francés, which houses a nearly 400-year-old Mexican conifer believed to be Madrid’s oldest tree.
Besides serving as one of the city’s green lungs, it is a popular spot for Madrileños who enjoy strolling, exercising, visiting exhibitions, or taking children to puppet shows. The park features a large artificial lake and the Velázquez Palace and Glass Palace, both currently used as exhibition halls by the Reina Sofía Museum. Near the Rose Garden, visitors will find the statue of the Fallen Angel, the only sculpture in the world dedicated to the devil, intriguingly located 666 meters above sea level.
- Malasana - This neighborhood is named after Manuela Malasaña, a heroine and victim of the historical events in Madrid on May 2, 1808. Plaza del Dos de Mayo, at the neighborhood’s heart, commemorates the rebellion against Napoleon’s occupation led by captains Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde, officers at the Monteleón Artillery Regiment headquarters.
In the vibrant 1980s, Malasaña was the birthplace of the movida madrileña, an underground movement that transformed the arts, culture, and Spanish society.
