“Plaza del Arrabal” was the original name of the present day “Plaza Mayor”. The “Plaza del Arrabal” was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed “Plaza de la Constitución”. It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the “Plaza Real”. In 1873, the name changed to “Plaza de la República”. At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of “Plaza Mayor”.

Royal Palace Visit - The tour was very informative and certainly enhanced our visit to this impressive historic site, and the guide (Sergio) was entertaining and knowledgeable. One complaint - our “small group” tour of supposedly no more than 15 people had 23 people in it, which inevitably has a negative impact on the experience.

Small experience of a big palace. - The Royal Palace tour spends about half the time as a walking tour of central Madrid. The apparent reason for this is that the part of the palace accessible to visitors is quite limited and does not take long to view. Of the 3,400+ rooms in the palace, only about a dozen are accessible. As there are many people in lines to see the palace, moving through quickly is encouraged too. It makes for a very limited experience of the Royal Palace.

Incredible, overwhelming palace. Great guide but group was twice as large as advertised. - Guide was fantastic. An amazing historical review.
My only complaint is this was to be a small tour limited to sixteen people but we had roughly thirty. A group this size is hard to maneuver thru all the other tours.
Well worth the time and money though.

Very interesting visit. - A very interesting visit and a very knowledgeable guide. Sadly, we could not understand a lot of what he was saying as the microphones were not so good. In the street it was worse with the noise of the traffic.
